Ten Must Visit Waterfalls in Meghalaya

As per a survey conducted by Skyscanner, the town of Shillong in Meghalaya tops the most wanted vacation destination by Indian travellers for 2025. So if you are planning on visiting the magical land of Meghalaya in India’s north east, here are 5 mesmerizing waterfalls that you cannot afford to miss on your trip -

1. Wei  Sawdong Falls, Cherrapunji:

Wei Sawdong falls in Cherrapunji is arguably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Meghalaya. It is a three tiered waterfall with natural pools and turquoise coloured waters. To reach the waterfall you have to hike down for about 15 - 20 minutes to reach the viewing point. The trail can be quite slippery during the rainy season and one needs to be careful with the bamboo staircase. 
There is an entry ticket for the waterfall and lifejackets can also be availed on rent. The water stays pristine for most time of the year and you can swim in the naturally formed pool.

As of now Wei Sawdong waterfall is still closed for visitors after it was briefly open to tourists a few months back due to the ongoing differences between the local tribes.

2. Nohkalikai Falls, Cherrapunji:

Located about 7 km from Shora (Cherrapunji) is Nohkalikai Falls. Towering at a height of 1,120 ft, it is the tallest plunge waterfall in India and the fourth tallest in the world. The waterfall is fed by numerous streams at the top and plunges straight down into an azure pool at the bottom that resembles a lagoon. Legend has it that a woman named Likai jumped to her death after eating her own child. Likai's evil step-father murdered and cooked her child, and she unknowingly ate it. In a state of madness and rage, she then jumped from the heights of the falls near her village.The name Noh Ka Likai translates to "Where Likai Jumped"
The entry ticket for the falls is about Rs 50 per person.

The approach road is good however it is not advisable to hike down to the falls alone as the way up can be confusing and difficult. Tourists can view the falls from the viewpoint on clear days but on cloudy days as falls are not visible due to the rising mist.

3. Krang Suri Falls, Umlārem:

Located in the West Jantia Hills in Umlarem about  90 Kms from Shillong on the Agartala Highway, KrangSuri Falls is one of the most beautiful and popular waterfalls in the area. 
From afar, Krangsuri is a sight that will make you think of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. 
The placid river suddenly drops, creating a curtain of flowing water over a cave with blue, clear waters that can be seen at the bottom of the pool. The waterfall is located in the middle of a thickly forested area and one has to walk for about 20 minutes down hill to reach the spot.
There are railings around the falls where you can get good views with the backdrop of the azure waterfalls. On sunny days one can spot a rainbow formed due to the refraction of light on the water droplets.
Upstream, there is a small space surrounded by lush green vegetation where people can camp near the river and rent a boat. Visitors can also enjoy a dip in the pool and rent out life jackets. There are tickets to be purchased on entry.
It is important to note that there are multiple steps with deep descents and accents before you reach the spot, hence it may not be a good idea for people with mobility issues to visit.

4. PhePhe Falls, Skhentalang Village:

Phe Phe Falls which is  also called Phea Phea Falls is located in the West Jaintia Hills about 20 kilometres from Jowai, near the village of Jarain.
This waterfall is a spectacular two-tier fall and is a breathtaking sight that leaves visitors in awe.
To reach the falls one has to take a boat ride across a small stream and then walk along the river banks for about 30 - 40 minutes which can often be muddy due to the frequent rain, until you reach the viewpoint. From there one has to take a narrow trail of stairs with a steep descent to reach the falls after which you will come to the bottom of the plunge pool. This waterfall was relatively unknown a few years earlier but in recent times it has gained significant popularity.
PhePhe means paradise in the local Jaintia dialect that translates to Paradise Falls.

5. Umbyrlein Falls, Rangad Village:

Nestled deep within the hills of Meghalaya, the iconic Umbyrlein Falls lies in Rangad Village, East Jaintia Hills District at a distance of 36 Km from Jowai. 
It is a must visit for tourists who seek adventure far from the crowds. It is situated in a serene location with pristine waters that has a turquoise blue hue and natural swimming pool. 
To reach the waterfall you need to take a 2 km easy trek that has a paved stone path from the start till the end.  The waterfall has a sandy beach which is perfect for a swim although the pool is quite deep. Hence inexperienced swimmers are requested to be careful as there are no lifeguards around. There are also no changing rooms nearby, so one needs to come prepared for that.  The area has a grassland on the rolling hills with swings, wooden benches and gazebos to sit from where you can get a beautiful view.
The large open space has ample room for parking and the hiking  path is well laid out with seating areas erected along the way. Since this is a lesser known spot, visitors are advised to be responsible and not litter the place.You can carry a small  bag for your trash and  pick up whatever refuse that comes your way.

6. Prut Falls, Laitlyndop Village:

Prut Falls is a stunning natural attraction located in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India. Best time to visit Prut Falls:  The best time to visit is during the monsoon season (June to September), when the waterfall is at its fullest and most majestic, although visiting in the post-monsoon months (October to February) provides pleasant weather for exploration

7.  Kynrem Falls, East Khasi Hills District, Sohra:

Kynrem Falls, located in Meghalaya, India, is a stunning three-tiered waterfall that ranks as the 7th highest waterfall in India, cascading from a height of approximately 305 meters (1,001 feet). However, travelers should be cautious as heavy rains can disrupt travel plans and create slippery conditions.
Pro tip: The road leading to this place is a little bumpy and not so well maintained as the ones at Cherrapunjee. The best time to visit is during peak monsoon. You can go right up to the base of the thundering falls. Don't forget to waterproof your camera from the spray especially when you get close.

8. Suntung Falls (also known as Wahrashi Falls), Syntung village:
